Taking a course is also a good idea but it'll take awhile to really learn the language.In the meantime, I'd advise you to buy a Vietnamese phrase book and begin to get acquainted with the same. If you lived in an area like Kentucky, the people there often do not speak "correct" English and do not sound like the people you hear on TV.
